Eyes the shade of coal. Skin the tone of midnight. The ravens I bear, a deep abyss in flight. I am Maeglin, a member of the Deathwatch Guard, da'covale to the Empress, may She live forever. I am a simple man, with a simple past and a simple future. I serve.
Born da'covale in the outskirts of Noren m'Shar, I took care of horses as a young child. I do not remember much of my parents since I was taken into training for the deathwatch at the age of eight. My mother was sold when I was five but I remember the night before I left for a new life. As da'covale I had only one name, Maeglin, but my father gave me another, Saran. He said as a child a friend and himself made their own language for fun. This word was very specific for some reason, perhaps from so many late nights watching the cattle. It meant "the deepest of the night right before sunrise" I haven't seen him since but I bear this name to remember him.
Upon completion of my training many years later and after the start of the Hailene, I was shipped to Falme to serve in the Corenne under Lord Silvak. Here I received yet another name, Maggie, coined by General Okil Falkor and Marrek Oliver. Now I am known as Maeglin "Maggie" Saran, Deathwatch of the Corenne.
You have heard my story Oathbreaker, but now look into my eyes and ask yourself, will you await, obey, and serve until the Return is complete? If not, I suggest you run, because I will become your saran, the darkest moment in your life before the pattern embraces you into light and weaves you out again. Glory to the Empress, may She live forever. Further the Corenne and await the return.
